Your RV skirting is best installed using the “Twist Lock” style fastener.
Twist lock fasteners are an excellent choice for securing RV skirting to your RV or travel trailer. These fasteners provide a strong hold due to their unique twisting mechanism, ensuring the skirting panels stay firmly attached to the trailer body.
The twist lock stud features a “double” height design, allowing two female rings to be placed on the same stud and locked securely. This design enables overlapping of individual RV skirt panels, effectively eliminating gaps between them.
To create holes in the fabric for the female components, it is recommended to use a twist lock fastener die cutter for best results.
The male part of the twist lock fastener extends 3/4″. Ensure you have enough clearance when skirting your RV slide-out. Avoid pre-drilling all fastener holes; instead, attach each twist lock fastener one at a time as you work around your RV. These fasteners feature a corrosion-resistant nickel finish and rust-resistant brass springs. Note that mounting screws are not included due to the variety of possible surfaces (e.g., metal, tin, plastic, fiberglass) the fasteners may be mounted on. Consult your local hardware store to determine the best type and size of screw or rivet for your specific needs.
For securing each panel to the ground, each has a bottom “pocket hem” for weight inserts and stake loops spaced every 5 feet.
Each finished skirt panel has an additional 5″ pocket hem welded along the entire bottom for weight inserts. Â (The 5″ pocket hem is not included in the overall height of the panel).
The 5″ pocket hem is designed to fold back under the RV and lay flat on the ground. If you do not have access to weighted pipes or heavy PVC tubing to insert into the bottom pockets then you can simply set sand bags, bricks, rocks, or any other weighted item on top of the folded back flap to secure it to the ground.Â
Rope stake loops are also placed into each skirting panel every 5′ along the front bottom side allowing you to securely stake the panels into the ground. (Stakes are not included)
Useful Tips for RV Skirting
Consistent Height: Ensure the height over the RV wheel axles remains consistent to the ground, regardless of where your RV is parked.
Mounting Point: The rubber beading trim on most RVs is usually mounted at a consistent height on all sides, making it a reliable mounting point for skirting.
Fastener Selection: Choose the appropriate screws or rivets for twist lock fasteners based on your specific application. Consult a local hardware store professional for advice.
Corner Wrapping: Use longer skirting panels to wrap around corners, covering both sides and ends of your RV for better protection.
Panel Length: Opt for longer panels to minimize openings and reduce the need for splicing, ensuring a more secure fit.
Minimize Wrinkles: Attach twist lock fasteners one at a time as you work around your RV to minimize wrinkling. Avoid pre-drilling all fastener holes.
Safety Precautions: Cut the vinyl skirting fabric away from heat sources like the furnace or hot water tank exhaust to prevent damage.
Traveling: Remove skirting panels before driving or towing your RV. Properly store the panels to keep them in good condition.
Ordering Skirting: To avoid the rush in the Fall, order your new vinyl RV skirting between March and August.
Current production lead time on RV skirting is 2-3 weeks.
